On Monday, January 18, 2021, President Nagahiro Minato received an online courtesy call from Rector Heinz W. Engl of the University of Vienna which is one of Kyoto University’s Strategic Partners (SPs) institutions. Kyoto University Research Administration Office (KURA) supports research exchange with international partners through the SP’s scheme. The attendees from University of Vienna were Rector Engl, Professor Jean-Robert Tyran (Vice-Rector for Research and International Affairs) and Dr. Barbara Good (Head of the International Office). On behalf of Kyoto University, President Nagahiro Minato, Professor Kyoko Inagaki (Executive Director and Executive Vice-President for Gender Equality, International Affairs, Public Relations and External Relations) and Professor Yasuyuki Kono (Vice-President for International Strategy and Director of the International Strategy Division) participated in this event.

The meeting began with a speech from President Engl to congratulate the appointment of President Minato. It was followed by a lively exchange on the current status and future of the strategic partnership, suggesting the possibility of further research collaborations in the fields of data science and medicine.

To realize these ideas, KURA will continue discussions with the University of Vienna and coordinate with other related parties within the university. In addition, even though international travel is restricted due to the spread of COVID-19, we will continue to actively support exchanges with overseas research universities and work to enhance the international research activities of our researchers.
